RP students have this perception that Modern Dance IG only does contemporary, ballet- like dance. That’s not the wholesome truth. Yes, we do contemporary ballet-like dance but also infused with it are different genres such as jazz, ethnic and hip hop. That makes us even more unique than the other dance IGs.
Before Modern Dance was born, our seniors were called Dance Fusion. It was only recently (actually in 2006), was it changed to Modern Dance. We wanted to specialize in a particular dance style which is modern, thus changing the name would be most appropriate.
Our current instructor is Shahrin, from Apsara Asia. He is an accomplished dancer, gaining achievements in various dance competitions including, being in the top 16 in The Dancefloor. Another loveable instructor is Shanti, also from the same company but has stopped teaching us since March 2007 due to certain circumstances.
Consists of only about 24 members, we entered our first major competition; Danceworks 2007. Although we didn’t qualify to enter the finals, we won the ‘Best Costume Award’ and this is already a great achievement to us.
For now, we concentrate on improving our techniques so as to achieve more achievements in upcoming performances and competitions.
